What are DeFi protocols, and how is it different from staking protocols?

Both staking and DeFi can generate rewards from your crypto, but they work differently.

Staking involves committing assets to help support the operation and security of a Proof-of-Stake blockchain. Staking rewards generally come from the network and are paid in its native token.

DeFi involves supplying assets to an application built on top of a blockchain. Depending on the protocol, your assets may be used for activities such as lending or providing liquidity, with rewards generated from protocol activity.

Three practical differences worth understanding:

  1. Source of rewards

    • Staking rewards generally come from the blockchain network.

    • DeFi rewards may come from protocol revenue or token incentives.

  2. Risk exposure

    • Staking primarily exposes you to risks associated with the underlying network and staking mechanism.

    • DeFi may involve additional risks, including smart contract, oracle, collateral and protocol governance risks.

  3. Reward tokens

    • Staking rewards are generally provided in the network's native token

    • DeFi rewards may be paid in the subscribed asset, another token, or a combination of tokens.
