SPY est l’ETF américain coté le plus ancien et le plus reconnu, et il domine généralement les classements pour les plus grands AUM et le plus grand volume de transactions. Le fonds suit l’indice américain extrêmement populaire, le S&P 500. Peu de gens réalisent que le comité de l’indice S&P choisit 500 titres pour représenter l’espace des grandes capitalisations américaines – pas nécessairement les 500 plus grands en capitalisation, ce qui peut entraîner certaines omissions de noms uniques. Néanmoins, l’indice offre une exposition exceptionnelle dans le secteur des grandes capitalisations américaines. Il est important de noter que SPY est un fonds d’investissement unitaire, une structure plus ancienne mais tout à fait viable. En tant qu’UIT, le SPY doit reproduire pleinement son indice (ce qui le ferait probablement de toute façon) et renoncer au faible risque et au rendement du prêt sur titres. Il ne peut pas non plus réinvestir les dividendes du portefeuille entre les distributions, car le ralentissement de trésorerie qui en résulte nuira légèrement à la performance sur les marchés haussiers et favorisera les tendances baissières.
